Finalist - Travel Photographer of the Year, 2020

Delighted that this image - taken on Haast Beach on the west Coast of NZ's South Island back in February - was a Finalist in the 2020 Travel Photographer of the Year competition, in the 'Solitude' category.

Very gratifying, given that there were over 25,000 entries from more than 140 countries - and that I was one of about 30 UK finalists. The winners were announced at the end of January, 2021 - and can be seen on the TPotY website - that’s as far as I got - but was very pleased to have made it as far as the Final stage!

The photograph was taken whilst on a trip around New Zealand’s South Island  in February 2020 – we decided to do an overnight stop at Haast Beach, a remote little settlement with just a motel, a general store and a garage. The beach itself, which stretches for miles, is strewn with the debris of trees washed up by heavy storms.

Whilst pretty windy, it was a beautiful evening with a stunning sunset which just got better and better. There was one other couple also on the beach – I was able to get this image of them in the distance - backlit by the spray being blown up by the waves and Mount Aspiring National Park in the background – a wonderful place!
